Why You Should Use Scripture to
Pray Over Your Children
I have prayed over my children daily since they were born. A lady from church once told me, โLearn how to pray scripture over your children, and you can never go wrong.โ I took her at her word, and to this day I still pray scripture over my children, and now my grandchildren too.

I started simple. I found a verse that matched what was on my heart for them that day, and I prayed it back to God in their name. God has been so good. I have watched Him work in my kidsโ lives in ways I couldnโt have engineered myself, and my own faith has grown right alongside theirs.
Praying scripture isnโt a religious routine. Itโs a way to bring my deepest hopes for my children in line with what God already wants for them, and it leaves them a legacy of faith that outlasts me.
How to Pray Scripture Over Your Children
1. Pick a verse that matches the need. Is it their friendships? Their confidence? A hard season at school? Start with whatโs actually going on, then find a verse that speaks to it directly.
2. Personalize it with their name. Take the โyouโ or โusโ in the verse and swap in your childโs name. Jeremiah 29:11 becomes โFor I know the plans I have for [childโs name].โ Philippians 4:13 becomes โ[Childโs name], you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.โ That small shift turns a general promise into a specific declaration over their life. Friends have told me this is what helped their own kids internalize these truths, hearing their name inside Godโs promises instead of just hearing the words.
3. Keep it short. You donโt need a speech. Some of my most meaningful prayer times have been nothing more than reading the verse out loud with my childโs name in it. God isnโt measuring word count. Heโs listening to the heart behind it.

A quick note on picking verses: context matters. A verse about โsuccessโ in scripture often means something different than success in the worldโs terms, so itโs worth reading a verse in its surrounding passage before you build a prayer around it, rather than pulling a phrase out cold. If you want to go deeper on any of these, Bible Hub and a solid commentary are both free and easy to use.

What to Do When Praying Feels Hard
As parents, we donโt always come to prayer out of a place of calm, quiet peace. More often, we are praying in the middle of a stormโwhen a child is making heartbreaking choices, struggling deeply at school, or battling an illness.
If you are reading this list today with an exhausted heart, carrying a weight that feels too heavy to lift, please hear this: God does not measure the eloquence of your prayers.
When you donโt have the words, or when youโve prayed the same verse a hundred times and havenโt seen the breakthrough yet, remember that even whispering your childโs name to the Father is enough.
Scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. You donโt have to get the formula right. Just bring your raw, tired heart to Him, and let His Word do the heavy lifting.
