At different times in my life, I have wondered if can be sure about God’s love for me. People we love will hurt or leave us, but the Bible says God’s love never fails.

But how could a perfect God love me? I never felt like I was good enough. We know all the thoughts we have and the things we have done wrong. Thoughts and actions that other people may or may not even know about. But God knows.

God knows what is in our hearts. The thoughts we never say out loud. The good news is that God loves us unconditionally!

1John 4:8 plainly says that “…God is love.” He can’t help himself! God is the very definition of love.

Of course, the entire Bible is really a love letter from God to us. He shows us over and over again how much He has loved mankind during history.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

Let that sink in for just a moment. The Creator of the universe loves you. Say that again and insert your name at the end. God loves ___________.

I know God loves me because God is love and nothing can separate me from His love.

Does God Love Me When I Sin?

God is the ultimate definition of love. He created us and He knows we are not perfect because of sin. Adam and Eve had the perfect relationship with God and were able to spend time walking and talking with Him in the Garden of Eden.

Unfortunately due to sin, they were forced to leave the Garden and it forever changed the course of history. Sin has caused heartbreaking consequences for us but there is still good news!

Romans 5:8 tells us “But God shows His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

I have 5 children. Needless to say at some point someone is going to mess up and make a mistake. Does that mean I am going to love that child any less?

Absolutely not! I may be disappointed in their actions but it does not change my love for them. God sees our mistakes but He continues to love us just the same.

2. I know God loves me even when I sin because I am His child. He sacrificed His only son just for me.

Does God Love Me Unconditionally?

“But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” Psalm 86:15 God does not love us like other humans. God’s love for us is steadfast and never changes.

He does not get tired of us. God does not change His mind. He does not leave us, even when we sin.

“…behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 God loves you forever. Not just today, not just when you act nice, but He promises to be with you until the end of time!

Do you love people who hurt you? I’ll admit, it is hard to do! It is hard for me to love people who hurt my kids. But God gave His only son to be the sacrifice for our sins because He loves us!

Ephesians 2:4-5 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.”

3. I know God loves me unconditionally because He gave His Son for me and promises to be with me until the end of the age. He will never leave me.

Does God Love Me For Who I Am?

One of my all-time favorite verses in the Bible is Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,…”

“My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:15-16

God knew you before you were ever born! I can barely wrap my head around that. Think about when you were pregnant with your children. Did you love each one of them before they were born?

Jeremiah 29:11 tells us “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

I am only human so I can only imagine how much God, who is perfect, loves me. To think that the creator of the universe knew me, personally, before I was born and loved me before I ever took a breath is overwhelming.

4. I know God loves me because He knew me before I was born and He already had a plan for my life.

How does God show His love for me?

How do you show the people in your life that you love them? Maybe you do things for them, give them gifts, or tell them you love them, right?

He provides for your needs and gives you the free gifts of His love, grace, and mercy.

God does the same for us! He loves you so much that He gave His only son as a sacrifice for your sins.

Over and over again in the Bible, He tells us of His love for us.

  • Romans 5:8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  • Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
  • Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
  • Psalm 86:15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
  • 1 John 3:1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.
  • Lamentations 3:22-23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

What does God see when He looks at me?

What do you see when you look at your child? You see an amazing human that you love more than life and would do anything for, am I right?

God sees you as His child. Someone He loved so much that He thought you were worth dying for. Jesus loves you so much He willingly went to the cross for you.

Ephesians 1:3-5
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.”

You know their faults but your love for them covers their faults and you only see the best in them.

Yes, God knows all about our sin but when we confess our sins we are forgiven. When we accept His free gift of salvation we are changed. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Will we still make mistakes? Of course. But the Bible is very clear that we are not stuck in this state. “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6

God loves you too much to let you stay the way you are. He is working in you and molding you into the person He created you to be. And He won’t stop!

I have learned so much about God’s love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace from my children. I look at them and I see that precious baby I gave birth to. God looks at us and sees His creation, made in His image.

5. I can be sure of God’s love for me because I am His child and He chose me!

Conclusion

We know God loves us because He cannot lie so all of His promises are true. He tells us over and over again how much he loves us. God sacrificed his only son so we can be saved and live with him in eternity.

He provides for our needs. God forgives all of our sins. He has adopted us into his family and we are his children.

The next time you are tempted to believe the lie that the enemy wants you to believe, that God does not love you, you put on your armor and tell him to get behind you!
